You can now filter on textarea fields on lists and smartlists.

• Open a list with a textarea column
• If the filter bar is not displayed click toggle filter
• in the textarea column type some text
• press the filter icon at the end of the filter bar
• You see now that only items for which the textarea contains the filter text are in the itembox.
